In this episode I chat with homemaker, homeschooler, podcaster, and writer, Mystie Winckler, about her experience of keeping a home over the last 24 years. She candidly confesses that having come from a large family, she thought she knew everything she needed to know and that homemaking would be a piece of cake.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that her assumptions and expectations were seriously challenged by reality and she spent the first decade or so spinning her wheels in frustration.
But God met her in the place of chaos and shattered pride and faithfully showed her what homemaking was really about. It’s not about efficient systems that never fail, nor organized spaces that never get messy. Homemaking is about facilitating life and relationships so that the home reflects the light of the Gospel to a dark and dying world.
As we chat about Mystie's lessons learned and her ministry to homemakers, we cover all the usual ground of her beginnings, influences, priorities, hospitality, tips and more.

Mail Bag Tips
Save Those Sewing Patterns:
After listening to our Deep Dive Sewing Series, homemaker, Katy, shared how she preserves paper sewing patterns. She shares….
“My favorite thing to do to keep patterns is use a big roll of tracing paper to trace out the pattern in the size I need. It is an extra step, BUT it saves the full pattern and I can do multiple sizes of the same pattern over the years and even hand them down one day.”
This is a fabulous idea, Katy. Not only have you preserved the pieces, but you’ve preserved all the sizes of your pieces. Well done and thanks for sharing!
Save Your Family Vacation Memories:
Listener, Mary, from South Carolina sent me a text from our Deep Dive Family Vacation episode with this really great tip to help remember your travels:
“…we made memories when the kids were younger by sending a postcard home to ourselves writing in code or a few words about our vacation. We keep these as a family yearbook. Such a fun way to have the children explain our adventures and keep them alive as memories.”
I LOVE this tip so much! I recently saw an artist that I follow do something similar by sending herself a postcard with a sketch she created on location and a few notes about the location or what she did that day. Whatever you choose to include on the postcard, I think this is a fabulous way to create a keepsake of your travels. Thanks again, Mary!
Mystie Winckler's Signature Dish: Pulled Pork
This is her go-to recipe for hosting. Any cut of pork roast will work and you can cook this about an hour in the Instant Pot or all day in a slow cooker. Serve the meat and juice up with potatoes, shred the meat for taco or pulled pork sandwich fillings.
Below is Mystie's seriously simple pulled pork recipe along with my recipes for cole slaw and mango salsa. I recommend the cole slaw as a side dish for bbq pulled pork sandwichews and the mango salsa to top off your shredded pork tacos.
